Chapter 8

Up one level
This project, "Building a Linux-Based HTPC", shows you how to build a home theater PC using Fedora Core 1 and a slew of open-source software.

.lircrc (gray Hauppauge remote)

Download this file to configure your gray Hauppauge remote for use with MythTV. (Note: this file is not compatible with the black remotes that shipped with earlier versions of the PVR-250.)

Jarod Wilson's superb guide to installing MythTV on Fedora

Jarod was incredibly helpful on this project. His guide alone would have been a priceless asset but Jarod got actively involved in helping me write this chapter. His guide is very well written; so much so that I considered copying them verbatim and giving him full credit. In addition to setting up MythTV on the Hauppauge tuners, he also has a discussion of building a high definition MythTV box.

MythTV website

MythTV is an open source, "homebrew" PVR project for linux PCs. Started back in April 2002, the project has become very stable and feature-rich. You just won't believe this is free software developed one person.

Online PVR hardware database

This database is a comprehensive list of machine configurations, submitted by users along with their thoughts on how well the system performs. This is a very good place to start if you plan to build an HTPC from scratch and you want to avoid common hardware selection pitfalls.

Freevo website

Freevo is another open-source home theatre PC platform based on Linux and a number of open-source audio/video tools. I don't cover this in the book but it's included here as an alternative to MythTV.

Silent PC Review

Silent PC Review is dedicated to reviews, news and information about quiet, low noise, noise-free and/or silent computers and components.

Salt Lake Linux Users Group's HTPC How-To

This is a very thoughtful guide to building a home theater PC. I never saw this site before writing about doing this myself but it sure would have been helpful if I had. This site discusses several aspects of building an HTPC yourself, including how to choose the hardware that's appropriate for your needs and budget.

HTPC News

A website dedicated to everything HTPC! This site has hardware and software reviews as well as numberous guides. They even show you how to hook up you HD receiver to your HTPC. Good stuff!
