Chapter 2, "Automate Your Porch Light", eases you into scripting by describing how to control a light from your computer. When you go shopping for parts, make sure you choose the "X10 CM11A" computer interface. The Powerlinc interfaces aren't as universally compatible as the CM11A.
Chapter 2 X10-Controls.pl Script
This script, described in Chapter 2 of the book, turns a light on and off according to a schedule. It will also keep track of when you manually turn the light on or off so that it will not override your manual settings.
